Power Clash In Jigawa: Tinubu’s Minister Faces Off Against State Governor
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Jigawa State is grappling with a growing internal crisis fueled by a power struggle between loyalists of Minister of Defence Mohammed Abubakar Badaru and Governor Umar Namadi Danmodi.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Once a bastion of political stability, Jigawa now faces tensions that threaten the APC’s dominance and the state’s governance. Analysts warn that the ongoing division could create opportunities for opposition parties to make significant gains.
The rift began when Danmodi, who served as Badaru’s deputy for eight years, succeeded him as governor. Previously viewed as a loyal subordinate, Danmodi is now striving to establish his authority within the party and government.
According to Daily Trust, Danmodi faces an uphill battle, as key positions in his administration—including the deputy governor, commissioners, and advisers—are dominated by Badaru loyalists. Moreover, most state assembly members align with Badaru, while the Speaker remains a close ally of Danmodi, creating a politically precarious situation for the governor.
A turning point occurred during recent local government elections, where chairpersons reportedly loyal to Danmodi were elected, giving him a stronger foothold at the grassroots level. Despite this, Badaru’s allies retain significant sway within the legislature and executive arms of government.
The crisis has also extended to the APC’s youth wing. Last year, a faction led by Ahmad Magaji Bashir called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider Badaru’s appointment as Minister of Defence, accusing him of undermining the APC’s agenda in Jigawa and favoring the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“We are disappointed by Badaru’s actions, which seem to align more with the PDP than with advancing the APC’s objectives in Jigawa,” Bashir claimed.
In response, the APC Students and Youth Awareness Forum defended Badaru and called for unity, urging both the governor and minister to work together for the benefit of Jigawa’s citizens.
Governor Denies Division
Governor Danmodi has dismissed reports of discord within the party, reiterating his commitment to unity and downplaying the allegations of a rift during a press briefing upon his return from vacation.
