Presidency Breaks Silence On Finance Minister Wale Edun’s Health — Here’s What Nigerians Need To Know

The Presidency has issued an update on the health status of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, assuring Nigerians that he is steadily recovering.

The clarification comes after Edun was replaced as head of Nigeria’s delegation to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., which commenced on Monday, October 13.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced that Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso would lead the Nigerian delegation in Edun’s absence, citing that the minister was “indisposed.”

Amid speculation that Edun had suffered a stroke and been flown abroad for treatment, the Presidency has dismissed such reports as false.

According to presidential aides, the minister — a key figure in President Bola Tinubu’s economic team — is recuperating and in stable condition.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Communications, Sunday Dare, further confirmed Edun’s wellbeing via a post on his official handle on Monday, writing:

“Moments ago, I got off the phone with Nigeria’s Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, in Abuja. Over a bowl of amala, we spoke for a few minutes with assurances he was getting better. I wished him the best of health.”

Dare’s statement comes amid public concern over Edun’s health, given his pivotal role in President Tinubu’s fiscal strategy, particularly in coordinating monetary reforms to stabilise the naira and drive economic growth.
