Presidency Reacts To NLC, TUC Strike Enforcement: Many Of Them Are Labour Party Supporters

Commencing today, the organized labour, represented by these major bodies, has enforced an indefinite industrial strike, leading to the closure of numerous workplaces in compliance.

The strike action stems from the Federal Government’s stance against increasing the proposed minimum wage beyond N60,000.Despite negotiations between the NLC, TUC, and the government, centered on the expiration of the current wage award in April 2024, a resolution remains elusive.

While the government has offered N60,000, the unions insist on a higher wage of N494,000, down from their initial demand of N497,000.In response, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, took to social media to express his dismay at the extreme measures taken by Labour.

He pointed out that many affiliates of the NLC and TUC are ardent supporters of the Labour Party (LP), a significant presence in the 2023 general elections.

Onanuga suggested that Labour’s actions may be politically motivated, potentially harming the Nigerian populace they claim to represent.

He remarked, “Today, many sick Nigerians cannot access medical care at government hospitals, even those with critical conditions.

It appears labour is playing politics by other means. Many affiliates of the NLC and TUC are members and supporters of the Labour Party.

They logically bear ill will and grudges against the Tinubu administration.”Onanuga emphasized the need for dialogue rather than “blackmail or sabotage,” stressing that the issues at hand require mutual negotiation for resolution.
