Presidency: Tinubu Made No Commitment To Labour On Fuel Price Increase

The Presidency has denied that President Bola Tinubu ever promised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) that his administration would not raise fuel prices. Naija News reported that NLC President Joe Ajaero had called for an immediate reversal of the recent fuel price increase, alleging that Labour accepted the ₦70,000 minimum wage based on a promise that fuel prices would remain unchanged. Ajaero explained that during the negotiations, Labour was faced with the choice of either accepting ₦250,000 as a minimum wage with potential fuel price increases or ₦70,000 with no increase in fuel prices, ultimately choosing the latter despite recognizing its inadequacy.

In a statement, Labour expressed profound disappointment, accusing the federal government of secretly raising fuel prices despite prior assurances. They emphasized that the decision to accept the ₦70,000 minimum wage was based on the understanding that fuel prices would not be increased.

In response, Abdulaziz accused Ajaero and Labour of engaging in dirty politics and misleading the public. He clarified that during the two meetings between President Tinubu and Labour leaders, no discussions were held about linking fuel price increases to minimum wage adjustments. “I was present at both meetings with Labour leaders, and at no point was any offer made regarding fuel prices in exchange for minimum wage,” Abdulaziz stated on his X handle.
