Speaking on Monday through the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, at an event commemorating 25 years of Nigeria’s presence in space and technology, Tinubu stressed the need to strengthen the legislative framework supporting the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA). He proposed enhancing the Act that established the agency to help the Nigerian space sector become more dynamic, both locally and internationally.

“There is a need to strengthen the Act that established NASRDA to help the Nigerian space ecosystem become more vibrant in its local and international engagements,” Tinubu stated.

The President also highlighted the crucial role of the private sector in advancing Nigeria’s space aspirations, urging its deeper involvement in the nation’s space programme. “Great effort should be made to ensure that the private sector is mainstreamed into the heart of our space program to maximize opportunities for national development,” he added.

Tinubu further appealed to lawmakers to provide increased funding for NASRDA, emphasizing that the agency’s work holds the potential for significant socioeconomic benefits. “The sector requires improved budgetary support to accomplish its programs. This will solidify Nigeria’s standing as a leading space-faring nation in Africa and enhance its competitiveness in attracting foreign direct investment,” he remarked.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s progress in space science, Tinubu commended NASRDA for its significant achievements, including capacity building and satellite development. He praised the agency’s work in launching indigenous satellites that provide essential socioeconomic and environmental services. “NASRDA has developed and launched major space programs, including building indigenous capacity in space science and producing and launching satellites for socioeconomic and environmental services,” the President concluded.
