President Bola Tinubu emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and unity, urging citizens to avoid language that could heighten tensions. He reiterated that the tax reform bills are intended to benefit all Nigerians, regardless of their region or ethnicity.

Idris described the proposed tax reforms as critical to achieving financial autonomy for states and local governments, while also addressing long-standing challenges in resource allocation. He stated, ā€œI urge all commentators and groups to engage in respectful and informed discussions. We must avoid resorting to name-calling or injecting unnecessary ethnic and regional slurs into this important national conversation.ā€

The minister also warned against the spread of misinformation and fake news surrounding the bills, emphasizing that the fiscal reforms would not impoverish any state or region, nor would they lead to the elimination or weakening of federal agencies.

He further explained, ā€œPresident Bola Tinubu is pursuing a comprehensive fiscal reform agenda that will ensure a fairer distribution of resources to Nigeria’s states and local governments, ultimately benefiting the Nigerian people and strengthening our democracy.ā€ He added that there is no hidden agenda behind the process, and the government is committed to transparent and inclusive dialogue.

Idris revealed that the President has instructed the Federal Ministry of Justice to work with the National Assembly to address any concerns raised by Nigerians before the bills are passed.

The statement concluded, ā€œWe are witnessing the most significant fiscal reforms in Nigeria in decades. In addition to the four tax bills being debated, the recent 2023 Supreme Court ruling on local government financial autonomy will further empower local governments to better serve the Nigerian people. These reforms will increase revenue without burdening citizens with higher taxes and will ensure greater accountability in managing public resources at all levels of government.
