Among the notable attendees was the current Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who was also a governor in 1999. It’s worth mentioning that late President Umaru Yar’Adua was also part of the 1999 set.

Regrettably, ten out of the 36 governors from the class of 1999 have passed away. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, Mala Kachalla, and Abubakar Hashidu were among those who served as governors during that time. Each had their unique political journey, contributing to the nation’s development in different capacities.

During the meeting, President Tinubu reassured Nigerians that the government was working on a framework for palliatives to mitigate the effects of fuel subsidy removal. He emphasized that this decision was in the best interest of the country’s future prosperity.

While acknowledging the challenges faced by the Nigerian people, President Tinubu appealed for patience as the government accelerated efforts to implement uncompromised social security structures, including cash transfers. He expressed his desire to ensure that the intended beneficiaries received the assistance they needed.

Addressing his fellow governors, President Tinubu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the country, remarking that he never anticipated becoming President but remained committed to democracy and the nation’s well-being.

The former governors pledged their support to President Tinubu’s vision for a greater Nigeria, offering their experience and expertise to aid in its realization.

A total of 19 governors attended the meeting, including President Tinubu and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

Despite the absence of ten classmates who have passed away, the reunion provided an opportunity for reflection, camaraderie, and discussions on critical issues facing the nation.

The meeting concluded with the affirmation that Nigeria, under President Tinubu’s leadership, would attain its rightful place with the support of the class of 1999 governors.
