Yusuf Kailani, the Special Assistant to the President on Climate Change Matters, made this known while speaking to the press on Wednesday. He emphasized that the government is actively involving professionals and experts to address the impacts of climate change.
“The President is deeply concerned about the effects of climate change and is taking the lead in addressing them,” Kailani stated. “We are engaging experts to ensure the sustainability and success of these initiatives, highlighting the importance of partnering with relevant stakeholders to achieve the nation’s climate goals.”
He further noted, “Governance is an ongoing process, and the government cannot achieve these goals alone. As Nigeria prepares for the upcoming COP29, various activities are being planned to showcase the country’s progress on the global stage.”
Earlier, Sulaimon Arigbabu, the Executive Secretary of HEDA Resource Centre, also addressed the issue, noting that climate change is a pressing reality. He pointed out that those most affected in Nigeria are often members of rural communities, particularly vulnerable farmers.
Arigbabu warned that when farmers are impacted by climate change, it poses a threat to both food security and national security. However, he expressed confidence that with better information and knowledge, the vulnerability of these communities can be reduced, leading to greater resilience.
