As the Chairperson of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu called on African military institutions and states to recognize the need for democratic renewal and discourage coup d’états, especially in the face of challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, insecurity, and climate change.
He stressed the importance of respecting the tenets of democracy and the rule of law to ensure political stability on the continent, urging African leaders and supranational organizations to adopt and implement protocols on democracy and good governance.
President Tinubu also emphasized the interconnectedness of democracy and development, stating that commitment to democratic principles and governance is vital for long-term peace, security, and economic growth.
He expressed readiness to work with the UNDP and other partners to promote democratic renewal in Africa and thanked the organization for launching its flagship report on military coups and the need for democratic renewal on the continent.
