Protesters Announce Massive Return With New Strategy

The movement, which began on August 1 and ended on August 10, saw demonstrators in Abuja and other cities advocating for the reinstatement of the fuel subsidy and lower electricity tariffs, among other demands. Protesters carried placards with messages such as “Reinstate a corruption-free fuel subsidy,” “Rent should be paid monthly,” and “Nigerians are weary of ineffective leadership.”

Despite their sustained efforts, the protesters expressed frustration with President Bola Tinubu’s perceived indifference to their concerns. Activist Abiodun Sanusi, speaking on behalf of the group, announced that while the demonstrations will pause temporarily, they plan to return with a significantly larger and more determined assembly if their demands remain unmet.

“After ten days of protest aimed at ending poor governance, it is evident that President Tinubu is unwilling to address our issues,” Sanusi stated. “We will return to the streets with an even greater force, declaring a 10-million-person march across Nigeria and the FCT.”

The recent protests were marked by violence, with security forces using excessive measures against demonstrators and journalists in several states. The Nigerian Army also admitted that a teenage boy, Ismail Mohammed, was unintentionally killed during a protest in Zaria, Kaduna State.
