Protests Against Fubara Disrupt Port Harcourt

Port Harcourt witnessed a tumultuous scene as protests erupted, purportedly orchestrated by paid youths amidst the local government council chairmen tenure extension controversy in Rivers State, according to the Coalition of Rivers State Professionals.

Architect Ipalibo West Mnia addressed reporters on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, accusing unnamed politicians of funding the unrest to sow discord in the state. He claimed, “The crowds seen on Port Harcourt’s streets today are not genuinely concerned youths but paid demonstrators. No responsible youth would protest against an administration that has exemplified good governance.”

Mnia continued, alleging, “This orchestrated unrest aims to provoke a state of emergency declaration in Rivers State. I assure you, we are far from such a scenario and pray it never happens here.”

While acknowledging the police presence at council offices, Mnia suggested it was in the state’s best interest, preventing potential clashes among incentivized protesters. He defended Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s decision to institute Caretaker Committees (CTCs), emphasizing the necessity for continuity in governance.

The coalition, comprising professionals from diverse sectors, distanced itself from any efforts to destabilize civil governance in Rivers State, reaffirming their support for Governor Fubara as he marks his first year in office.
