Union leaders in Nigeria, led by Comrade Benjamin Anthony, chairman of the Trade Union Side of the Joint Meeting of the National Public Service Negotiating Council, have set forth a demand for a new minimum wage of $300 (equivalent to N436,500) for Nigerian workers. This proposal comes as a response to the continuous decline in the value of the naira, affecting the purchasing power of citizens. READ FULL ARTICLE HERE
The demand was presented at the 2023 meetings of the Separate and Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council held in Goshen City, Nasarawa State. Comrade Anthony highlighted the challenges posed by the high exchange rate and the removal of fuel subsidies, contributing to the increased cost of living in the country.
Represented by the union’s secretary, Comrade Boma Mohammed, Mr. Anthony urged the federal government to address the insufficient current minimum wage of N30,000, which has become inadequate in the face of economic challenges.
“In light of the above, Labour has proposed a Living Wage of $300 (N436,500) for Nigerian Workers. This is due to the fall in the value of our currency; today if you carry N100,000 to the market, you will come back with a leather bag of items,” he stated.
The union also called on the government to promptly settle the arrears of the N35,000 wage award and expedite the process of implementing a new living wage to alleviate the plight of the working class.
President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, expressed dissatisfaction with the inclusion of some governors in the 37-member tripartite committee on the minimum wage who are not complying with the approved salary structure. Ajaero emphasized that governors fully complying with the minimum wage are not adequately represented in the committee.

Positive Reactions:
- Femi Adeyemi: Finally, the NLC is taking a bold step to address the financial struggles faced by workers. This proposed new minimum wage is a step in the right direction. 👏🇳🇬
- Chiamaka Okonkwo: Kudos to Comrade Benjamin Anthony and the entire union leadership for championing the cause of Nigerian workers. Let’s hope the government listens and implements this new minimum wage. 💪💼
- Ngozi Anichebe: It’s about time our leaders take notice of the economic challenges we’re facing. This proposal reflects the reality on the ground, and I hope it leads to positive changes for workers. 🙏💰
Negative Reactions:
- Ahmed Musa: Another unrealistic demand from the NLC. Instead of addressing the root causes of the economic challenges, they’re asking for more money. This won’t solve anything. 😡🚫
- Blessing Efe: The NLC should focus on advocating for better economic policies rather than asking for higher wages. We need sustainable solutions, not short-term fixes. 🤷♀️💼
- Tunde Adewale: This demand is coming at a time when the country is grappling with economic issues. It’s not the right moment for such requests. The NLC needs to be more realistic. 🤨💸
