Sources within the EFCC revealed to Punch that these arrests followed suspicions regarding the disbursement of state funds. Recently, Edo State received a deposit of N24.6 billion, but within a week, only about N14 billion remained, prompting concerns about the swift outflow of cash.

An EFCC insider explained that the agency’s actions are aimed at safeguarding the state’s financial integrity, not obstructing its operations. “We apprehended two to three individuals, including the Accountant General. Our investigation into Governor Godwin Obaseki has been ongoing since 2022, but this arrest was triggered by withdrawals from the state’s derivation account,” the source stated.

The source noted that the amounts withdrawn were substantial, highlighting that after the recent deposit of N24.6 billion, roughly N14 billion was left in the account in less than a week. “To protect the state, we had to act swiftly. Our goal is not to disrupt state activities,” they added.

This development follows accusations from Edo State governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who has alleged that the Obaseki administration engaged in last-minute borrowings and misappropriation of funds. In a statement on October 16, Okpebholo called for investigations by relevant authorities, including the EFCC, police, and Department of State Services.
