Relief For Patients as Resident Doctors Call Off 2-Day Warning Strike Netizen React

The strike, which commenced on Friday morning, was called off late Saturday following a decision confirmed by the association’s president, Dr. Tope Osundara, in a communiqué issued to journalists.

“Some of our demands have been met, while the government has promised to address the remaining issues. In the spirit of goodwill, and to ease the burden on Nigerians seeking healthcare in our facilities, we have suspended the strike and directed members to resume duty immediately,” the statement read, as reported by The PUNCH.

Dr. Osundara, however, did not disclose which specific demands had already been addressed.

Disruptions Across Hospitals

The strike had brought services in public hospitals nationwide to a halt, leaving consultants and other health workers to manage overwhelming caseloads. Patients faced long delays and limited access to care, with many describing the two-day period as “frustrating and stressful.”

The resident doctors had downed tools over unresolved welfare and funding issues, including:

• Immediate payment of the outstanding 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund.

• Settlement of five months’ arrears from the 25–35% Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) review.

• Payment of the 2024 accoutrement allowance arrears.

• Timely disbursement of specialist allowances.

• Recognition of the West African Postgraduate Membership Certificates by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

• Issuance of membership certificates by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

• Full implementation of the 2024 CONMESS structure.

• Resolution of welfare issues affecting doctors in Kaduna State.

• Intervention in the plight of resident doctors at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.

Although NARD has agreed to resume work, the body stressed that it will closely monitor the government’s response and warned that failure to act swiftly could trigger another round of industrial action.
