Respect Despite Defeat! Diego Simeone Hails Ademola Lookman After Madrid Derby Loss

Diego Simeone has expressed support for Ademola Lookman following Atlético Madrid’s 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid in a La Liga derby on Sunday.

Lookman enjoyed a memorable first Madrid derby, scoring in the 33rd minute after a well-worked move. He finished calmly inside the box following a clever backheel from Giuliano Simeone, giving Atlético Madrid a first-half lead.

However, Real Madrid fought back after the break, with Vinícius Júnior scoring twice and Federico Valverde adding another to secure the comeback victory. Nahuel Molina had earlier restored parity for Atlético with a long-range effort before Madrid regained control.

After the match, Simeone praised Lookman’s development but highlighted the need for further improvement in his defensive responsibilities.

“He is improving and working very hard. He has been used in different attacking roles, and we need him to continue adapting,” Simeone said.

“We are also helping him develop his defensive contribution so he can support the team better. He is a young player with a strong mentality and willingness to learn, which is very important. Hopefully, he will keep producing key moments like today.”

Lookman was substituted early in the second half as Simeone adjusted his tactics.

His goal made history, as he became the first Nigerian to score in a Madrid derby and only the eighth Atlético player in the 21st century to score on his debut in the fixture. He now has nine goal contributions in 14 appearances for the club.
