According to him, three main factors led to the merger:

“Firstly, there was a widespread perception that Jonathan was not effectively leading the country. Secondly, he had promised not to run for re-election in 2015, causing divisions within his own party. And thirdly, we in the smaller opposition parties—CPC, NPP, ACN—recognized that if we didn’t unite, the PDP would continue to defeat us individually each election cycle,” El-Rufai explained.

He emphasized that the coalition was largely a survival strategy for the opposition, rather than being motivated by regional or ethnic considerations.

Despite being part of the group that brought President Muhammadu Buhari to power—a government often criticized for its performance—El-Rufai said he remained silent throughout its eight-year rule.
