The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made the disclosure on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme.

There had been speculations that the President’s decision was linked to an alleged coup plot against his administration, but Onanuga dismissed the claims, describing the move as a routine leadership change.

“It’s a routine change,” Onanuga said. “The President is deeply concerned about the way the security situation is being managed, and he believes it’s time to bring in new hands. He has directed the new service chiefs to ensure that the insurgency, which started in 2009, does not resurface.”

He added that the President had given the new military chiefs a clear mandate to take decisive action and bring an end to the lingering insurgency and insecurity across the country.

Addressing reports of an alleged coup attempt, Onanuga dismissed them as baseless rumours, blaming sensational journalism for spreading unnecessary panic.

“It was simply the spread of rumours,” he said. “As a journalist, I understand how some in the media chase headlines and clickbait without considering the public interest. Many of those reports were sensational and misleading.”
