Revealed: The Sh*cking List Of Countries Now Snubbing ECOWAS Court Rulings

The updated figures highlight a widespread regional challenge of non-compliance, with Nigeria accounting for the largest backlog.
Sowe explained: “Nigeria has a total of 125 judgments. Out of these, 67 were dismissed, 10 have been enforced, and 48 remain unenforced. With two more recently added, the figure now stands at about 50.” He noted that the Court has delivered 492 judgments involving 12 active ECOWAS member states, of which 192 are classified as enforceable.
He added: “To date, 775 cases have been filed before the ECOWAS Court of Justice. When AES countries are excluded, the number drops to 702. Of the 492 judgments delivered that involve AES countries, 419 remain when AES states are excluded. The Court currently has 136 pending cases.
“Out of the 419 judgments involving AES countries, 192 are enforceable — meaning the member state or defendant is required to take specific actions.”
Providing a country-by-country breakdown, Sowe reported the following:
-
Benin: 19 total; 13 dismissed; 6 unenforced; 0 enforced.
-
Cape Verde: 3 total; 2 dismissed; 1 unenforced; 0 enforced.

For the ECOWAS Commission, Sowe added that there are 36 judgments, of which 18 were dismissed, 14 enforced, three unenforced, one amicably settled and one abandoned.
He noted that more than half of all judgments issued since the Court’s inception have been dismissed, a trend that raises concerns about the types of cases being filed. He said the Court plans to address this through increased outreach.
Sowe also confirmed that most member states have now set up the required national authorities responsible for enforcing ECOWAS Court judgments.
