Addressing concerns amid heightened political tensions, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, affirmed that the recent deployment of police personnel at the Rivers State House of Assembly Quarters in Port Harcourt is solely aimed at upholding peace and averting any potential breach of law and order.
During an interview with Channels TV, CP Disu clarified the role of the police amidst ongoing speculations surrounding the leadership dispute within the state assembly. Dismissing claims of a police takeover, he explained that the presence of officers was merely a preventive measure to maintain peace, contrary to some inaccurate reports circulating in the media.
Disu emphasized that the deployment was not excessive, with only four patrol vehicles stationed at the quarters. He reassured that despite minor tensions and demonstrations in the area, there hasn’t been any alarming escalation of unrest, with citizens freely moving around the state.
Regarding the enforcement of an interim court order restraining certain lawmakers from assuming legislative roles, Disu stated that the police hadn’t received official notification from the court to act upon such matters. He highlighted that police presence at the assembly complex predates the current political friction, underlining their ongoing commitment to peacekeeping duties.
This clarification from the Commissioner of Police comes at a crucial juncture, as concerns over potential disruptions to law and order in Rivers State persist amidst political tensions. The police force’s actions and presence in key political sites remain under scrutiny, with stakeholders closely monitoring developments.
