Initially scheduled for Monday, the protest was intended to challenge the ongoing police blockade of 23 local government secretariats, preventing caretaker chairmen appointed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara from assuming office.

The decision to postpone the protest came after warnings from the police, who threatened arrests if the demonstration proceeded.

Confirming the postponement, Ikechukwu Onyefuru, Chairman of the Rivers State Trade Union Congress (TUC), stated, “We have suspended all planned peaceful protests scheduled for Monday, June 24, 2024. Our focus now shifts to pursuing legal avenues to ensure our workers resume duties.”

Meanwhile, former chairmen from 21 of the 23 local government areas, who were elected during the tenure of former Governor Nyesom Wike, staged protests within their respective councils. They justified their continued presence citing the Local Government Amendment and Administrative Law No. 2 of 2024, which extended their tenure due to delays in conducting local government elections by Governor Fubara.

The ex-chairmen and their supporters reiterated their allegiance to Wike amidst the ongoing political struggle with Governor Fubara for control over the state’s political landscape.

Last week, Governor Fubara announced the conclusion of the tenure of these former chairmen through a statewide broadcast and introduced caretaker committees for the councils. However, the police intervened by barricading the council secretariats to prevent any disruption.
