Rivers Leadership Struggles: Fubara Shares His Persistent Requests To Wike

Amid the rising crisis in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara revealed that he has repeatedly knelt to appeal to his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in hopes of fostering peace in the state. In a gesture of reconciliation, the governor emphasized his attempts to maintain a collaborative relationship with Wike for the sake of peace, although these efforts have not produced the desired outcome. “There is nothing I have not done for peace to reign. I can tell you the number of times I have knelt to beg for this issue to be resolved. I have done everything,” Fubara said during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on October 7.

The political tensions between Fubara and Wike escalated significantly during the recent local council elections. Despite the withdrawal of the PDP, APC, and police from the electoral process, the governor proceeded with the elections. Following the swearing-in of 22 officials elected amid controversy, violent clashes erupted in at least four local government areas, with thugs setting parts of buildings on fire in Eleme, Ikwerre, and Emohua. Sporadic gunfire was also reported in Ahoada East as a reaction against the newly appointed council officials. This unrest followed the withdrawal of police officers tasked with securing the 23 council premises, as directed by the commissioner of police.
