Rivers State: PDP Faces Challenges Amid Loss Of Local Government StructureRivers State is currently facing significant political turmoil stemming from the conflict between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The discord, ongoing since last year, revolves around control over state resources and political influence.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HEREā–¶

Despite attempts at mediation by prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and even President Bola Tinubu, reconciliation efforts have failed. Wike appears to have gained the upper hand, commanding a majority of the State Assembly members and maintaining control of the PDP structure within the state.

Although the PDP Governors’ Forum recommended returning leadership to Fubara, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, which is sympathetic to Wike, has recognized Wike’s loyalists as the legitimate state executive committee members.

The recent local government elections, conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), have exacerbated the situation. Governor Fubara insisted on proceeding with the elections despite a court ruling that barred security agencies from participating. Meanwhile, Wike’s supporters in both the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) boycotted the elections, citing the RSIEC’s failure to provide the legally required 90 days’ notice.

In light of Wike’s influence in the PDP, Fubara directed his supporters to contest the elections under the Action Peoples Party (APP) banner.

Shift in Political Landscape

The results indicate a strong performance by the APP, which won chairmanship positions in 22 out of 23 local government areas and secured 314 of the 319 available councillorship seats. This suggests that Governor Fubara has regained control of the local government structure as he heads into upcoming elections.

While some political figures criticized Fubara’s strategy, others, including the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, have expressed support for him. Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, lamented the party’s diminishing grassroots influence, marking a significant shift for a party that has dominated Rivers State since 1999.

Has PDP Really Lost Ground?

In an interview with Naija News, former PDP gubernatorial aspirant Segun Sowunmi contended that the local government election results do not equate to a total loss of influence for the PDP in Rivers. He pointed out that similar scenarios have occurred in other states without signifying the end of the party’s presence.

Sowunmi explained, ā€œThe outcome in Rivers is unfortunate but does not mean the PDP has vanished. Time will reveal how the party responds moving forward, as there are other politicians who neither support Wike nor Fubara. The political crisis impacts the masses, but it doesn’t mean the PDP’s strength is gone.ā€

When asked why party leaders have not effectively intervened, Sowunmi noted that the party’s structure allows various levels of governance to operate independently. He emphasized that while individual character may intensify conflicts, the situation is not unprecedented and should not be solely blamed on the PDP.

He concluded, ā€œRivers State is in a complex situation, and only the courts can resolve this crisis. It’s crucial for the courts to expedite their decisions and consolidate cases. The key questions revolve around whether the pro-Wike lawmakers have lost their legal standing and if Governor Fubara’s budget has received proper approval.
