The win marked a major milestone for Nigerian football, as Rivers United became the first Nigerian Premier League team in six years to advance to the group phase of Africa’s elite club competition — the last being Lobi Stars during the 2018/19 campaign.

After a narrow 1-0 defeat in Maputo, the Pride of Rivers came out with intent, pressing high and dominating possession from the start. Timothy Zachariah nearly broke the deadlock in the sixth minute, setting up Ubong Friday, whose effort was tipped behind by the Black Bulls’ goalkeeper.

Their persistence paid off in the 15th minute when Wasiu Falolu reacted quickest inside the box to slot home and level the aggregate score, sparking wild celebrations in Uyo. Moments before halftime, Falolu was brought down near the area, earning Rivers a penalty that Maclyn Biokpo confidently converted to put them 2-0 up and ahead 2-1 on aggregate.

The visitors responded early in the second half through Moctar Diallo, who found the net to make it 2-1 on the night and 2-2 overall. But coach Finidi George’s tactical changes soon restored control, as substitutes Rivio Ayemwenre and Samson Obi injected fresh energy into the side.

The decisive moment came in the 75th minute when Zachariah unleashed a thunderous strike from distance into the top corner, restoring Rivers United’s lead and sealing their qualification. The hosts expertly managed the closing stages, frustrating the Mozambican side until the final whistle.
