In Riyadh’s Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium, the 39-year-old Portuguese icon initially faced challenges breaking through a team positioned 14th in the Saudi Pro League.

Al Fayha had been one of only two clubs in the domestic league to thwart Ronaldo from scoring, and it seemed that streak would extend to a third match.

However, in the 81st minute, Ronaldo surged forward and expertly volleyed the ball past the advancing goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic following a quick exchange with Marcelo Brozovic.

Earlier in the game, Ronaldo missed a much simpler opportunity right before halftime, but his feeble attempt was thwarted by Stojkovic.

In other Wednesday fixtures, Bangkok United netted a stoppage-time goal against Yokohama F Marinos to secure a 2-2 draw, while FC Nasaf and Al Ain settled for a goalless stalemate.

South Korea’s Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors are on the brink of securing a spot in the quarter-finals following a 2-0 triumph over Pohang Steelers.

At Jeonju World Cup Stadium, Jeonbuk, champions in 2006 and 2016, found the net through their Brazilian forward Hernandes in the 17th minute, with Ahn Hyun-beom doubling the lead in the 64th.

Bangkok United’s substitute Mahmoud Eid nodded in a header in the 92nd minute as the Thai side clawed back from a 2-0 deficit at Thammasat Stadium in Pathum Thani.

Nitipong Selanon had earlier narrowed the deficit with three minutes left in the first half.

Elber opened the scoring for the visiting Japanese outfit in the 18th minute, and Watanabe doubled their lead in the 24th from Ren Kato’s well-placed pass.
