The unintended discharge of the officer’s weapon startled protesters, who initially feared that one of their own had been injured. However, they soon learned the true nature of the incident and resumed their demonstration.

According to LEADERSHIP, a joint security team consisting of police, military, immigration, Department of State Services, and Civil Defence had set up barricades at the Bulunkutu railway junction to prevent #EndBadGovernance protesters from advancing into Maiduguri’s city center.

The officer, who was part of the security detail tasked with controlling the crowd, was promptly taken to a local hospital for treatment. His current condition has not been disclosed.

The protesters were rallying against the government’s response to the ongoing insurgency in the region and other national grievances.
