Sambo Dismisses Peter Obi’s Leadership Credentials, Sparks Fresh Debate

The Director of News at Arise Television, Sumner Sambo, has argued that the Obidient Movement has evolved beyond the political ambitions of its leading figure, Peter Obi, insisting that the former Anambra State governor can no longer provide the leadership the movement requires.

Sambo made the remarks during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Wednesday, where he called on Obi to transform the movement into a well-structured political organisation capable of enduring beyond any single individual’s ambition.

According to him, the Obidient Movement has developed into a significant political force that should not remain solely tied to Obi’s presidential aspirations.

Drawing a comparison with the historic Zikist Movement, which rallied support for Nigeria’s first President, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sambo said the Obidient Movement could continue to thrive even if Obi does not emerge as president in 2027.

He argued that the movement’s greatest weakness is the absence of a strong organisational framework, despite the enthusiasm and commitment displayed by many young Nigerians who identify with it.

Sambo noted that while the movement enjoys widespread grassroots support, it lacks the political structure needed to sustain its momentum and translate its popularity into long-term influence.

He, however, questioned Obi’s ability to provide the kind of leadership required to build that structure, maintaining that the aspirations of the movement have grown beyond the capacity of any one individual.

The veteran journalist also cited the resignation of former Obi/Datti Presidential Campaign Organisation Deputy Campaign Manager, Comrade Isaac Balami, as an indication of unresolved internal challenges.

According to Sambo, Balami’s departure and subsequent comments pointed to alleged shortcomings in the management of campaign funds and the execution of campaign strategies during the 2023 general election.

He further criticised Obi for allegedly failing to convene a post-election review meeting after the 2023 presidential election, arguing that such a gathering would have provided an opportunity for supporters to evaluate the campaign, strengthen unity within the movement and develop a roadmap for the future.

Sambo maintained that without stronger leadership and institutional structures, the Obidient Movement may struggle to sustain its political influence in the years ahead.
