Akinwunmi Ambode served as governor from 2015 until he lost his bid for re-election in 2019 to Sanwo-Olu. The two had a contentious relationship during the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election, which led to a falling out. However, in 2023, the two reconciled publicly during a reception organized in honor of President Bola Tinubu at Lagos House in the Marina area of the state. This event marked the first time in over four years that Sanwo-Olu, Ambode, and another former Lagos governor, Babatunde Fashola, were seen together, signaling a significant step toward mending internal party divisions
