Sanwo-Olu Assures Lagosians OF Timely Fix After Independence Bridge Closure Sparks Outrage

Published

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed his apologies to Lagosians for the inconveniences caused by the closure of the Independence Bridge.

Speaking with reporters on Thursday morning during a visit to the bridge, the Governor acknowledged that while the closure was unfortunate, it was crucial to ensure the safety of road users. He emphasized that the ongoing repairs were necessary to prevent a potential disaster due to the bridge’s age.

Sanwo-Olu explained that without immediate action, there was a risk of the bridge collapsing, which could lead to catastrophic consequences. He pointed out that the Independence Bridge, one of the oldest in the country, had suffered significant erosion over the years, with parts of the structure no longer properly supported.

He said, “I want to begin by offering my sincere apologies to all Lagosians for the inconveniences caused by the closure of the Independence Bridge. We take full responsibility for the disruption, but this action was taken with the best of intentions to prevent a future disaster.

“The bridge is almost 80 to 90 years old and has reached a critical point. Some parts, particularly the Victoria Island approach, are under severe threat. If not addressed now, we could face a situation where the bridge collapses, leading to potentially tragic consequences.”

The Governor reassured the public that the ongoing repairs were aimed at securing the long-term integrity of the bridge and urged continued support as the government worked to ensure the safety of all residents.
