Scandal Leads Matt Gaetz To Step Down As Trump’s Attorney General NomineeMatt Gaetz, a Republican congressman embroiled in multiple scandals, has stepped down from consideration as U.S. Attorney General in President-elect Donald Trump’s upcoming administration. The withdrawal, announced on Thursday, marks an early setback for Trump, who has faced growing criticism over a series of controversial nominations, including Fox News host Pete Hegseth for Defense Secretary and billionaire Elon Musk to lead a government cost-cutting initiative.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Gaetz, who had been nominated for the nation’s top legal position, was under investigation by a congressional panel over allegations of sexual misconduct with a 17-year-old girl — which he denies — as well as claims of drug use and misappropriation of campaign funds. These controversies sparked widespread opposition to his confirmation, even from some members of his own Republican Party.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Gaetz said, “I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback — and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition.”
Gaetz, who was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016 and recently won re-election, resigned from Congress shortly after being nominated by Trump for the Attorney General role.
Despite Gaetz’s withdrawal, Trump expressed his support, stating, “Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do.”
The announcement adds to the mounting controversy surrounding Trump’s nominations. Pete Hegseth, Trump’s pick for Defense Secretary, is also facing scrutiny following a sexual assault investigation related to a 2017 incident at a California conference. The New York Times reported that a married woman involved in the incident claimed memory loss and suspected her drink had been spiked, although Hegseth denied the allegations, asserting the encounter was consensual. The police investigation was ultimately closed without charges.
