Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has accused the state’s 18 local government areas (LGAs) of mismanaging ₦83 billion in federal allocations over the past year.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The governor made the allegation during a courtesy visit by the acting Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government, Alabi Bliss Oshionogue, and councillors to his office in Benin City.

Citing data from the state Accountant-General’s office, Governor Okpebholo revealed that the LGAs received over ₦6.5 billion monthly in allocations from January to September 2024, which increased to over ₦8 billion monthly from October to December 2024.

“From January to September 2024, the 18 local government councils received over ₦6.5 billion monthly. From October to December, this rose to over ₦8 billion monthly. In total, these PDP-led LGAs collected over ₦83 billion in one year,” Okpebholo said.

He attributed the increase in federal allocations to the reforms introduced under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, emphasizing its goal to foster grassroots development.

“Before President Tinubu’s administration, Edo State’s local governments were receiving ₦3.5 billion monthly. Today, they get over ₦8 billion monthly, specifically for the LGAs, not the state government,” he explained.

Despite these funds, the governor expressed frustration at the lack of visible development in the LGAs.

“These chairmen had the audacity to withdraw ₦800 million monthly from local government accounts while our schools remain in deplorable conditions, lacking teachers and proper infrastructure. They’ve been in office for a year with nothing to show for it,” Okpebholo lamented.

“Edo State must progress, and no one will hold us back,” he vowed.

Commitment to Agriculture and Grassroots Development

Governor Okpebholo also pledged to prioritize agricultural investment and work closely with local governments to achieve sustainable development.

“We will collaborate with you to ensure progress and make things work,” he told the acting chairman and councillors.
