Fresh details have emerged about the recent impeachment attempt against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, revealing that it was not a coordinated rebellion but rather a loose coalition of discontented lawmakers drawn from both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition parties.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC), Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, confirmed the existence of the plot during an interview with journalists at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

The former Abia State Governor disclosed that the move to unseat Akpabio was foiled through the intervention of lawmakers determined to preserve the unity and integrity of the 10th Senate.

Kalu emphasized that the Senate remains focused on its legislative responsibilities and committed to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in tackling the country’s economic challenges.

“Though there were attempts, we didn’t allow that to happen. That is why I always say we are one big family, and it is not going to happen. The Senate is united behind its leadership,” Kalu said.

“Whatever the problem is, the Senate is more interested in making laws that will help President Tinubu overcome the economic difficulties our people are going through. The legislations we are making are pro-people, focused on ensuring Nigerians can eat three times a day.”

According to Daily Trust, insiders familiar with internal discussions revealed that several senators felt alienated in the distribution of committee appointments, accusing Akpabio of concentrating influence within a small circle of loyalists.

The sources also noted that some lawmakers expressed frustration over what they described as poor consultation on critical national matters, including budgetary decisions and security briefings.
