According to The PUNCH, insiders at the PDP National Secretariat disclosed that governors, lawmakers, and members of the Board of Trustees reached a consensus to reinstate Anyanwu, provided he adheres to specific rules.

“He was required to sign an undertaking pledging not to intimidate any party staff or interfere with preparations for the convention,” a source revealed. “He also agreed to drop all court cases against the party.”

Acting PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, later confirmed the reinstatement to reporters:

“We all agreed that Senator Anyanwu will continue as National Secretary. Our next NEC meeting is set for July 23, where we will finalize plans for the national convention.”

This resolution followed a closed-door meeting last week between Damagum, Anyanwu, and select National Working Committee (NWC) members at the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters, where they reaffirmed support for Anyanwu’s return.

However, within hours, another faction of the NWC — including Acting Secretary Setonji Koshoedo, South-East Vice Chairman Ali Odefa, and Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja — also met at the same venue and endorsed Koshoedo to continue as acting secretary, revealing ongoing divisions within the party.

These internal cracks have deepened since the 2023 general elections, further polarized by two rival factions: one loyal to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the other aligned with former Rivers State Governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Makinde’s camp — supported by governors from Enugu, Osun, Zamfara, and Bayelsa — has opposed Anyanwu’s return and insisted the NEC proceed without him. Wike’s faction, with backing from governors in Plateau, Bauchi, Taraba, and Adamawa, advocated for Anyanwu and called for a delay in the NEC.

Adding to the drama, security operatives barricaded the PDP national secretariat (Wadata Plaza) ahead of the NEC meeting, prompting the Board of Trustees (BoT) to relocate their session to the Yar’Adua Centre.

Reacting to the blockade, BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara and Secretary Senator Ahmed Makarfi condemned the act, describing it as a clear attempt to intimidate the party.

Senator Wabara recounted:

“I arrived at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge by 10 a.m. as directed. The meeting brought together governors, the NWC, and minority leaders in the National Assembly. Its goal was to close internal ranks and present a united front ahead of the NEC meeting. The governors expressed anger over the blockade, and the Chairman quickly made alternative arrangements to avoid further disruptions.”
