Security Shake-Up: IGP Egbetokun Summons Border Commanders, Drops Tough New Orders

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has urged Border Patrol Commanders nationwide to execute their duties with renewed vigor, stressing that as Nigeria’s first line of defence, they bear the critical responsibility of protecting the nation’s sovereignty, preventing bloodshed, and preserving its identity.

The IGP gave the charge during a conference with commanders at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Highlighting the vast and complex nature of Nigeria’s land borders and maritime corridors connecting the country to the Gulf of Guinea, Egbetokun commended the Border Patrol Unit for its persistent efforts in tackling the evolving nature of border-related crimes.

In a statement released on Friday by Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the IGP emphasized the need for innovation and strategic foresight, warning that “21st-century crimes cannot be fought with 20th-century tools.” He called for the adoption of modern technology such as surveillance systems, drones, biometric scanners, and real-time data analysis.

He further underlined the importance of intelligence-driven policing, community trust, and strong collaboration with sister security agencies as the foundation of effective border security.

While acknowledging the sacrifices of officers in the line of duty, Egbetokun assured that improving the welfare of police personnel remains a top priority under his leadership.

He tasked commanders to remain vigilant, proactive, and unrelenting in preventing and neutralizing threats at the nation’s borders, assuring Nigerians of the Force’s steadfast commitment to security and the defence of the country’s sovereignty.
