Adeyemi Adaramodu, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, conveyed this message during an interview with journalists on Wednesday.

The statement follows remarks made by Prof. Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, last week, suggesting a reconsideration of the minimum age requirement for university admissions to be set at 18 years old.

According to Adaramodu, these comments do not constitute law but rather personal perspectives. He highlighted that for such changes to become law, they would need to undergo the appropriate legislative channels.

He explained, “Commentary on the minimum age requirement for admission is not legally binding. It’s a matter of personal opinion. It doesn’t hold legal weight. When the Senate reconvenes, if someone wishes to formalize this into law, they would need to introduce it as a bill, triggering standard legislative procedures.”

Adaramodu elaborated on the process, stating, “Any proposed bill would undergo public scrutiny through a public hearing. All relevant stakeholders, including parents, educators, lawmakers, civil society groups, and even international bodies, would participate in discussions. Regardless of whether the proposed minimum age is 30 or 12, it would be thoroughly debated in an open forum. Thus, at this stage, it remains a matter of discussion rather than law.”
