He argued that funding should reflect a needs-based approach, stressing that Northern Nigeria requires additional resources to alleviate extreme poverty levels in the area.
“Sixty-five percent of poor people live in the North, while 35 percent are in the South,” Yilwatda stated. “We need to consider what each local government and state requires, and allocate revenue according to the poverty or wealth levels in each state.”
Following his remarks, the Senate allowed Yilwatda to “bow and leave,” as is traditional for nominees after their presentations.
President Bola Tinubu nominated Yilwatda last week to succeed Betta Edu, who was recently relieved of her duties as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.
The Senate is expected to reach a final decision on Yilwatda’s confirmation as a member of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) later today. Other nominees awaiting Senate screening include Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi (Minister of Labour and Employment), Bianca Odinaka Odumegwu-Ojukwu (Minister of State, Foreign Affairs), Dr. Jumoke Oduwole (Minister of Industry, Trade, and Development), Idi Muktar Maiha (Minister of Livestock Development), Rt. Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata (Minister of State, Housing), and Dr. Suwaiba Said Ahmad (Minister of State, Education).
