Akpabio made the remark on Wednesday during deliberations on the general principles of a Bill seeking to amend the Electricity Act, 2023.
The proposed legislation aims to tackle emerging challenges in Nigeria’s power sector, improve policy and regulatory coordination, boost sector financing, safeguard vital electricity infrastructure, strengthen industrial relations, clarify transitional processes, and redefine how licensees engage with host communities in the electricity supply chain.
The bill (SB. 862) was introduced by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Power, representing Abia South under the APGA platform.
Akpabio noted that sustainable industrial development is impossible without reliable electricity, stressing the urgent need for a comprehensive reform of the power sector.
He said, “Many assume we are in the Senate to enrich ourselves, but in truth, we are here to make sacrifices for the generations to come.”
