Senate Tensions Escalate As Akpabio, Wadada Disagree Over Port Harcourt Refinery Status
Senate Tensions Escalate As Akpabio, Wadada Disagree Over Port Harcourt Refinery StatusDuring Tuesday’s Senate plenary, a tense exchange unfolded between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada (SDP, Nasarawa West) over the ongoing operations at the Port Harcourt refinery.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Last week, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced that the refinery had resumed operations. However, the claim has been met with skepticism, as many industry experts and Nigerians have questioned the refinery’s actual operational status.
While discussing the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP), Senator Wadada raised concerns about “technicalities” surrounding the refinery’s operations and urged the Senate to intervene and clarify the situation.
In response, Akpabio suggested that an ad hoc committee would be formed to investigate the matter further, stating, “The government has already been commended for the refinery’s restart. If you have concerns, they should be raised as a formal motion in plenary, not on social media.”
Wadada, clearly frustrated, countered, saying, “With all due respect, do not associate me with social media.”
He then revealed that three months ago, he had submitted a formal written concern to Akpabio about revenue tax issues, but had received no action from the Senate President.
Akpabio responded by acknowledging he had reviewed the document and reiterated his advice, saying, “If you have concerns, present them as a formal motion so they can be addressed properly.”
The Senate President assured that the ad hoc committee to probe the refinery’s operations would be formed during an executive session.
