South East senators have decided to convene with the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, in an effort to persuade the federal government to drop the terrorism charge against Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently on trial. Led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe under the Concerned Federal Lawmakers for Peace and Security in the South East, the senators from the region will meet with Fagbemi (SAN) today.
Confirming the meeting, Senator Abaribe’s Special Assistant on Media informed reporters that the discussion would take place at the Conference Hall of the Attorney-General’s Office within the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja.
Calls for Kanu’s release have intensified since his arrest in Kenya in 2021 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. The South East Governors Forum recently agreed to engage President Tinubu to discuss Kanu’s release.
In addition, Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has urged the federal government to release Kanu. Speaking from his residence in Onitsha, Obi emphasized the need for the government to comply with court rulings regarding Kanu’s detention.
Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, has argued that a Supreme Court ruling on December 15, 2023, supports Kanu’s release, a sentiment he expressed on his social media platform.
