The much-anticipated defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been postponed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
A close aide of the governor told Daily Post that the official defection initially scheduled for Monday, January 5, 2026, has now been moved to Monday, January 12, 2026.
Earlier reports suggested that Governor Yusuf was set to formally join the APC on January 5. However, a source close to the governor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that Yusuf requested additional time during a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja on Friday.
The source explained that the governor wants to engage with remaining state legislators and key stakeholders who have not yet fully aligned with the planned political move before finalizing the defection.
Kano, a historic city and key political hub in northern Nigeria, has been abuzz in recent days with reports of Yusuf’s intended switch from the NNPP to the APC.
Meanwhile, the NNPP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, addressed speculation regarding internal defections within the party’s Kwankwasiyya movement.
The party, currently facing an internal crisis in its Kano stronghold, has been the subject of widespread rumors suggesting that Governor Yusuf may decamp to the APC in early January 2026.
However, in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Johnson clarified that Yusuf has not communicated any plans of defection to the NNPP’s National Working Committee or National Executive Committee.
He also dismissed claims that the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has approved any move by Yusuf or the people of Kano to join the APC.
