Sh*cker From Reno Omokri: ‘Igbo Cap Is Actually A European Winter Hat

During his appearance on a popular podcast, Omokri claimed that the cap commonly associated with Igbo culture is, in fact, a European winter accessory introduced during colonial times.

Nothing he’s wearing originates from Nigeria — nothing!” Omokri said, pointing to a man wearing the cap. “That cap is a European winter hat once used by colonialists. It’s the truth — it has no Igbo roots.”

Omokri didn’t stop there. He also questioned the Nigerian origin of other traditional attire. Referring to the male anchor’s white outfit — known as Etibo — he said:

“That’s actually a sailor’s uniform. It was called Etibo because it sold for 8 ‘bows’, an old currency. Over time, people mispronounced ‘bows’ as ‘Etibo’. It’s not indigenous to Nigeria.”

He also addressed the popular George wrapper, widely worn in parts of southern Nigeria, claiming:

“They call it ‘George’ because during King George’s coronation, the colonial government distributed the fabric to Nigerian women. That’s when it became popular. The fabric originated from Holland, with cheaper versions later coming from India. It’s not Nigerian-made — they just made you believe it was.”
