In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court, led by Justice Inyang Okoro, unanimously upheld the election victory of Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State. The dismissal of the appeal on Friday, filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Sadique Abubakar, affirms the judgments of the lower courts and solidifies Governor Mohammed’s position as the valid winner of the gubernatorial contest held on March 18, 2023. The APC and Abubakar contended that the election was not conducted in substantial compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, alleging discrepancies in the filling of several electoral documents used during the poll. However, both the Bauchi State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal and the Court of Appeal in Jos rejected Abubakar’s case, upholding Governor Mohammed’s victory.

Dissatisfied with the lower courts’ verdicts, the APC candidate took the matter to the Supreme Court, arguing that his case and the exhibits presented were not properly evaluated by the tribunal. The Supreme Court, in a resounding decision, found no merit in the appeal, resolving all issues formulated by the appellants against them and reinforcing the legitimacy of Governor Bala Mohammed’s election.
