Sh*ckwaves In Politics: Two Opposition Governors Set To Defect To APC

Former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, has sparked fresh political intrigue after claiming that the Governor of Taraba State and another governor from the North West are on the verge of defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a post shared via his verified Twitter handle on Tuesday, October 7, Ahmad declared:
“In just a matter of days, the Governor of Taraba State and another Governor from the North West will officially join our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

Though Ahmad did not name the second governor, his remarks have reignited speculation about a new wave of defections from opposition parties to the ruling APC in the build-up to the 2027 general elections.

Taraba State, in particular, has been under the spotlight, with mounting pressure from youth groups urging Governor Agbu Kefas of the PDP to switch allegiance. Advocates argue that aligning with the APC would give the state better access to federal resources.

While Governor Kefas has not made any public statements, his increasingly visible ties with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu — through frequent engagements at both public events and private meetings — have fueled talk of an imminent political realignment.

Political observers suggest that Kefas’ possible move may be motivated less by partisan loyalty and more by the need to secure long-delayed federal investments in the state. A Jalingo-based analyst explained:
“The writing may be on the wall. With 2027 approaching, defections are not unusual. But for Governor Kefas, this could be about unlocking federal collaboration for Taraba rather than party politics.”

Adding to the pressure, the Concerned Taraba Youth Group recently urged the governor to join the APC, citing stalled federal projects such as the Mambilla Hydro Power Project and the abandoned Zing–Jalingo–Wukari road.

Group spokesperson, Shedrack Iremiya Gani, said:
“Considering the continued neglect of federal projects in Taraba, we appeal to Governor Agbu Kefas to align with President Bola Tinubu in order to attract greater federal presence. We want him to make history by leaving the PDP and joining the APC.”

Within the ruling party, optimism is high. A senior APC chieftain, speaking anonymously, revealed that more high-profile defections from the PDP are already in the works.
