Sh*ckwaves Online As El-Rufai’s Son Challenges Court Decisions On Boko Haram Vs. Kanu Sentences

Speaking during Thursday’s plenary debate, Bello questioned the transparency of the country’s judicial processes. He referenced the recent 20-year sentence handed to an Ansaru terrorist, Husseini Ismail, and compared it to the life sentence issued to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

He said, “A Boko Haram terrorist, Husseini Ismail, was recently sentenced to 20 years by a high court. Meanwhile, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu received a life sentence last week. I don’t understand why one terrorist gets 20 years and another gets life. As Pastor pointed out, justice seems to be applied differently, and this deepens the problem.”

Bello also commended President Bola Tinubu for unveiling a comprehensive national security reform plan but urged the National Assembly to ensure the executive arm follows through with clear timelines and measurable implementation strategies.

“The president has put forward a strong plan, and many colleagues have acknowledged that. But our challenge is not planning—it’s executing those plans with specific timelines. This parliament must insist on those timelines,” he said.

The lawmaker, son of former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, further emphasized the urgent need to improve the welfare and salaries of security personnel, noting that Nigeria falls far below international staffing standards.

“One police officer currently serves about 600 Nigerians, whereas the UN recommends a ratio of 1 to 400. We are severely understaffed, and while the president is addressing that, we must also immediately raise the basic salaries and welfare of police officers and soldiers. We must find the resources to make that happen,” he added.
