She Set Him Up!’ – Mercy Chinwo Under Fire Over VeryDarkMan’s Sudden Arrest

Nollywood actor and producer Stanley Ajemba, popularly known as Stanley Ontop, has accused gospel singer Mercy Chinwo of being behind the arrest of social media critic Martins Vincent Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).

VeryDarkMan was reportedly apprehended by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday, May 2, 2025, after he accompanied his mother to GTBank to lodge a complaint regarding an unexplained deduction from her account.

In an Instagram post on Sunday, Stanley reacted to the incident, directly blaming Mercy Chinwo for orchestrating the arrest. He dismissed GTBank’s involvement, writing:

“GTBANK is not responsible for VDM’s arrest at their premises. Mercy Chinwo is responsible for the arrest of VDM.
Church is another government agency that uses our police, EFCC, or military to intimidate citizens. Mercy Chinwo is the problem now, not GTBank.”

He also criticized Nigerian churches, alleging they function like state agencies by using security forces to suppress ordinary citizens.

Meanwhile, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi expressed concern over recent developments in Nigeria, warning that such incidents threaten the nation’s democracy, economy, and civil liberties.

In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Obi referenced the arrest of VeryDarkMan, saying the way it was handled created public fear and could set a dangerous precedent. He questioned the implications of such actions on the rule of law and respect for human rights in Nigeria.
