Human rights activist and former Senator Shehu Sani shared a memorable encounter with former President Olusegun Obasanjo at Kirikiri prison in 1995. Recounting the incident during the second edition of This Nigeria’s lecture and Award Event in Abuja, Sani revealed that upon their arrival at Kirikiri Maximum Prison alongside late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, they were met with a mixed reception.

Sani, then deputy chairman of the Campaign for Democracy, described an intense moment when inmates recognized Obasanjo and began shouting insults. He intervened, reminding them that despite Obasanjo’s previous status as a commander, within the prison walls, Sani asserted his own authority. Reflecting on the experience, Sani highlighted the disparities in treatment between political prisoners and others, recounting their journey from Kaduna to Lagos and subsequent imprisonment in different parts of the country.
