Shehu Sani Stands Firm: Minimum Wage Should Be N100,000 Minimum

Sani contended that the government possesses the financial means to institute a reasonable minimum wage, asserting that ensuring a living wage for laborers is not unreasonable. He stated, “It’s incomprehensible how a Nigerian could manage on anything below N100,000. A breakdown of the government’s proposed figure, between N45,000 and N48,000, reveals its impracticality when considering various factors. The government should seriously consider the stance taken by labor.”

Moreover, Sani highlighted the imperative of both agreeing to increase the minimum wage and ensuring the capacity to fulfill such commitments. He noted the government’s recent struggles with meeting existing wage obligations, cautioning against overlooking this reality in discussions about wage hikes.

Sani pointed out that since the subsidy removal, the government has witnessed an influx of revenue, suggesting that channeling some of these resources towards increasing the minimum wage would be a judicious utilization. He argued, “Economic reforms come with repercussions, which are meant to entail sacrifices but must be evenly distributed.”

Additionally, Sani emphasized that workers perceive the influx of government revenue and demand their fair share. He concluded, “Subsidies enhance wage value, but their removal necessitates compensatory measures.”
