In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service in Kaduna, Gumi suggested that the recent surge in violence in various parts of the country indicates external backing for armed groups destabilizing Nigeria.

He noted that signs of improving security were emerging in key hotspots, such as the Abuja–Kaduna highway, which had previously been notorious for frequent attacks and kidnappings.

“That route had become significantly safer in recent months before this renewed wave of violence,” he said.

Gumi also highlighted the return of farmers to their fields in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State, after years of abandonment due to insecurity.

“The return of farmers was a positive sign of relative peace. But the sudden spike in attacks raises serious concerns,” he added.

The cleric urged the Nigerian government to strengthen intelligence operations, enhance diplomatic efforts, and thoroughly investigate any potential foreign involvement in the country’s security challenges.

“Authorities must take a closer look at possible external support for these armed groups,” Gumi stressed.

He warned that the recent uptick in violence contradicts earlier progress in combating banditry and terrorism, cautioning that neglecting the possibility of foreign influence could undermine long-term peace initiatives.
