Former Kano State Governor Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has explained why he chooses not to involve himself in the ongoing emirship dispute in the state, despite his concerns about the situation. Shekarau attributed the crisis to political influences and expressed hope for a swift resolution. He emphasized his commitment to peace in Kano and stressed the importance of the traditional institution. “I am deeply concerned as a Kano native and wish for peace in our state,” he said. “Since the matter went to court, I have chosen not to get involved or comment on it.”
He pointed out that the involvement of politicians appears to have exacerbated the situation. Shekarau noted that if politicians had stayed out of the issue and if the traditional institution had been properly engaged, the conflict might have been avoided. He underscored the need for harmony between traditional institutions and government leaders.
Reflecting on past collaboration, Shekarau recalled his work with the Emir of Kano on a council for almajiri children, highlighting their cooperative efforts as an example of effective synergy between traditional leaders and government authorities.
