In a statement by Mr. Bamidele Odugbesan, Shell Nigeria’s Manager of Media Communications and NGO Relations, it was disclosed that SPDC contributed $112.5 million while SNEPCo remitted $30 million. This marks an increase compared to the previous year, where SPDC remitted $59.04 million and SNEPCo $20.73 million in 2022.
These contributions, as noted by Odugbesan, represent statutory payments made by the Shell companies on behalf of themselves and their partners, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, TotalEnergies, EP Nigeria Limited, NAOC, and Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited, to support the initiatives of the interventionist agency.
Igo Weli, the SPDC Director and Country Head of Corporate Relations, emphasized the company’s commitment to the development of the Niger Delta region. He highlighted various social investments in health and education that Shell has undertaken, in addition to its support for NDDC.
Odugbesan further revealed that Shell Companies in Nigeria have been actively involved in community development programs since the 1960s, benefiting numerous Nigerians. Initiatives such as educational grants, healthcare services through the Health-in-Motion program, and entrepreneurship support through the Shell LiveWIRE program have positively impacted communities across the country.
It’s noteworthy that Shell Nigeria recently announced its payment of $1.09 billion in corporate taxes and royalties to the Nigerian government in 2023 solely through the operations of SPDC and SNEPCo
