The incident was confirmed in a statement released Monday by his brother, prominent poet and public intellectual, Dike Chukwumerije.

According to Dike, the attack occurred as the commissioner was returning from Okigwe to Umuahia.

“He was on his way back from Okigwe when a vehicle trailing him suddenly opened fire. Miraculously, he and the three passengers with him escaped unharmed, despite the vehicle being riddled with bullets,” he recounted.

Chaka, who has served as a commissioner in Governor Otti’s administration for the past two years, was praised by his brother for his honesty and service to the public.

“We didn’t send him into government with a list of demands. We only asked that he act with integrity—take nothing that isn’t his, and use his position to improve our society,” Dike stated.

He went on to highlight his brother’s unwavering loyalty to Governor Otti, noting that Chaka had been a steadfast supporter through multiple election cycles, even when outcomes were unfavorable.

“Since at least 2015, he’s poured his heart, energy, and resources into the campaign trail. Even when they were clearly rigged out, he returned home with dignity,” Dike added.

Reflecting on Otti’s leadership, Dike said his brother’s loyalty now makes sense.

“In just two years, Abia has changed direction… I don’t offer political praise easily, but Governor Otti is delivering in ways we haven’t seen in decades. Today, I can proudly say I’m Abian,” he said.

He also criticized the nation’s socio-political climate for often endangering genuine public servants, while promoting mediocrity.

“Sadly, it’s those truly committed to public good who often pay the price in our flawed system. Mediocrity is rewarded while integrity is punished,” he lamented.

Despite the frightening experience, Dike expressed deep gratitude that his brother’s life was spared.

“I am not afraid of death—but I speak only for myself. I know it will come, and when it does, it will meet me fully alive and unafraid. I thank God for preserving my brother’s life and pray for continued protection over those walking in truth and purpose,” he concluded.
